That tribute site is a good one
on Steve. When I talked to Steve,
years and years ago, he talked
    very lovingly about Elvin.

What I found in Steve's playing
that was really seeded in Elvin
was the use of the paradiddle-
diddle and as part of the ride.

I think we have talked alot a-
    bout Steve's recordings here
and a search would turn up a
    lot of goodies.

Right off the bat, the Chick is
a must, surely. I still have the
Mangione link on my server. That
    was from 'Tarantella'.

The Rickie Lee Jones stuff is
    really great. One Trick Pony,
with Paul Simon is great. There
    are so many.

Oh! David Grusin's One of a Kind
is a must, with Steve on it.

I can talk about Steve until the
    cows come home.

    We all owe him.

It may be old , but Up Close is great. On my dvd, in the special features he does a piece with the Buddy Rich Tribute band. I can't remember what it's called, but I've never seen a man that plays drums like that. He's just holding time, nothing fancy and it's highly effective.
Anybody else see this song on video?

The last time I saw Weckl in clinic, he was talking about Steve Gadd; stopped mid-sentence and said, "Now if you play drums and you don't know who Steve Gadd is, see me right after the clinic because we need to get that straightened out!"

Anyways, the "usual" Steve Gadd discography (50 ways, Aja, etc.), is great, but IMO that's almost talked about *so* much that we forget some of the less obvious things he's played on.

Off the top of my head, here is some essential (less obvious) Gadd (IMO):

    - The "Up Close" video is good to understand his approach to drumming. "In Session" is more about his approach to playing music. Personally, I find "In Session" to be very inspirational, and much more fun to watch. You really get to "absorb" his playing on that one.

    - Tom Scott's "New York Connection" has some great Gadd on it.

    - I also really dig his playing with DiMeola in the mid-/late-70s (although he did not always play on the entire albums). You can't go wrong wtih "Elegant Gypsy," "Casino," or "Land of the Midnight Sun." I could listen to "Senor Mouse" about 100 times in a row without getting tired of it! "Tour de Force" is a live album from the early 80's--Gadd plays on the whole thing and KILLS "Race with Devil."

    - Carly Simon's version of "You Belong To Me" is one of my all-time favorite tunes. Gadd's right in the pocket and demonstrates superb touch and control (plus there's an awesome sax solo by David Sanborn!)

    - "50 Ways" is great, but I think "Late in the Evening" has to be my favorite Paul Simon tune with Gadd.

    - Gadd plays brilliantly on Grover Washington's "Just the Two of Us." I love the way he just uses 8ths on the hat, and builds on the outro (without disturbing the groove, of course!)

Some other albums with Gadd (possibly not all tunes, though):

    - Stanley Clarke - "School Days"
    - Michael McDonald - "If That's What It Takes"
    - David Sanborn - "Voyeur"
    - Steely Dan - "Gaucho"

And you absolutely MUST have Chick's "Three Quartets"!!!

Sorry, I guess I got a little carried away. I could listen to Gadd play drums all day, every day and not get tired of it!!!

Well, I have two newer DVD's with Steve on them. The Paul Simon DVD is particularly good I think.

-Paul Simon "You're The One" In Concert DVD
    -Drummer's Collective 25th Anniversary DVD

When I saw the 1st of several Rod Morgenstein clinics back in the early-to-mid 80's, he taught that Gadd lick, Rudy [which Gadd also reprises at the end of '50 Ways' on the Simon & Garfunkel Live in Central Park video.] [img]graemlins/thumbs_up.gif[/img] Rod made it clear that Gadd was 1 of his biggest influences [along w Cob & others].

Weckl also said that about Gadd in the last clinic i saw of his in late Oct '03, mja.

    More "his Gaddness:"
    ------------------------
Along with that S&G-LICP vid i just spoke of, check out more of him with Chick Corea -
_Mad Hatter, Leprechaun, & My Spanish Heart [AWA of course the already mentioned 3 Quartets!]
_Family of Mann [Herbie] - "First Light ['74]
_Dave Grusin - Out of the Shadows ['82]
_Bob James & David Sanborn - Double Vision ['86]
_Al Jarreau - This Time ['80]. This 1 has great drummers Gadd on 3 trax [including Al & Chick's 'Spain'], Carlos Vega on 2 trax, & Ralph Humphrey on 4 trax.

All the material that these guys posted here are great stuff!
I also have that DiMeola Tour de Force Live, & it is WAAYY cool, junior! Pocket City.

Now, mind you, SG is not as interested in leveling you with chops as some of these other fave drummers in here MAY be from time to time, so be "pre-prepared," but don't let that fool you...he is regarded as 1 of if not THE greatest by ALL the heavies in here. His musicality, taste, sensitivity, pocket, & groove over the years are virtually unrivaled...& he HAS chops, altho maybe not quite necessarily regarded in the 'over-the-top' VC/DW/DC/VD/GN [at times] arena...the CC stuff, AWA Mad Hatter will show you some, & in a modern swing/bop context AW. His chops are saved ALWAYS, & I do mean ALWAYS, only "for the music."

Gadd kicked a** on that last Jms Taylor tour. Some of the other great drummers that come to my mind when i think of Gadd are Carlos, Erskine, Jeff, JR, Marottas, Kunkel, Keltner, et al...you get the picture.
